I’ve been a total slacker for the last few weeks –I have a few posts backed up and ready to go, but between learning more about photo editing and considering changing up the overall blog look and web-hosting situation around here, I’ve only managed to post once a week for the past few weeks. You guys, I did something weird. Last weekend, I bought a doughnut pan.
I am generally against purchasing kitchen tools that serve such limited purpose (unitaskers, if you’re an Alton Brown fan). It just seems silly and wasteful. But then I started thinking about my relatively newly discovered love of doughnuts (but only ones that are made locally in relatively small batches, not the kind from Dunkin Donuts or Krispy Creme…yes, I’m picky). But then I decided that there was absolutely no way that baked doughnuts would be anywhere near as delicious as fried doughnuts. And then I decided it might be nice to, on occasion, be able to make baked doughnuts at home in order to save money and potential calories, which led to thinking about the various flavor combinations that might come out of homemade baked doughnuts, which then led to finding a doughnut pan that was only $5. I obviously had a little blog hiatus. Coming back from a hiatus is hard, ya’ll. I’ll blame the holiday weekend.

It may be too hot for you to turn on your oven. But if you can suck it up (or if it’s not actually hot where you are), you should make these biscuits.
Biscuits are like a blank food canvas. You can put almost anything on a biscuit. Ham and egg? Butter and jam? Chicken? Honey? Bacon? Gravy? Yes to everything. You can even turn them into little strawberry shortcakes.
Sometimes, cake is a breakfast food. I fully endorse the “cake for breakfast” mentality. Cake for breakfast can totally make a weekend morning epic. Cake for breakfast can put a spring in your step for the rest of the day.
This cake might actually rock your breakfast world. I should also tell you that this cake can be eaten at all times of the day, not just breakfast. But it’s better for breakfast. Continue reading
